US Copyright Government Fees to Increase
[July 24, 2009]
US Copyright Office government fees for registration, assignment recordaton, and other services are set to increase effective August 1, 2009. The new fees are based on the costs of providing services, and reflect savings from the implementation of electronic processing. A few years ago when government fees increased all across the board for the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), some were skeptical those fees were actually designed for, and would in fact improve service. Today, it would be very difficult to argue that service at CIPO has not dramatically improved both in speed and quality. The increased US Copyright Office fees, assuming they are implemented in a similar fashion, may well produce the same result.
