What do Michael Jackson and intellectual property have in common?
[July 17, 2009]
You're probably a fan. You probably have at least one of his records, CDs, or in the now digital age, MP3s. Love him or not, you recognize his trade-mark. You know he owns the copyright catalogue of Beatles' songs. But ... did you know he is also an inventor? Michael Jackson invented "Method and means for creating anti-gravity illusion", which was patented on October 26, 1993 in the United States Patent Office (patent no. 5,255,452). The patent is now owned by Triumph International, Inc. Using special shoes, Michael created in one of his videos an incredible illusion whereby, from a standing position, he leans over unassisted, beyond his centre of gravity, without falling over. This invention and patent not only affirm his talent, but show that Michael's creativity extended far beyond music. His example also serves to demonstrate that talented people are always developing intellectual property, whether they know it or not.
